Apple’s mixed-reality headset could launch next March for $2000
After years of development, Apple is gearing up for mass production of its mixed-reality headset, reportedly commencing in March 2023. According to sources from DigiTimes Asia, the headset is expected to be manufactured by Apple supplier Pegatron, with an estimated cost exceeding $2000. Production is anticipated to start at the end of the first quarter of 2023, though initial output is projected to be limited. Annual shipments for Apple’s mixed-reality headset are estimated to be in the range of 0.7 to 0.8 million units.
In terms of design, the headset, likened to a pair of ski goggles, will be constructed from materials such as mesh fabrics, aluminum, and glass. It will boast a slim and lightweight profile compared to the Quest Pro. The device is equipped with iris-scanning technology for seamless user authentication upon wearing the headset. Featuring a dedicated processor, the mixed-reality headset will showcase two ultra-high-resolution 8K displays, while the operating system, named “rOS,” will be built on the existing iOS.
Consumer interest has been piqued by Apple’s XR “extended reality” headset, combining virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. Earlier this year, Bloomberg reported trademarks related to the headset filed by Apple-affiliated firms in the US and global markets. The mixed-reality headset is positioned to compete directly with Meta’s Quest Pro and PlayStation VR 2.
Meta’s Quest Pro, unveiled in October and priced at $1500, has recently become available for purchase. On the other hand, PlayStation VR2 is expected to hit the market early next year, with a price tag of $550.
